Behind Your Machine

Meet Charlie

After graduating with a Business and Management degree from The University of Redlands, Charlie continued his education at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA, focusing on an expanding interest in medical devices.

[Charlie A. Webb]

Charlie began his device career with MicroDynamics, an innovative ophthalmic micro surgical firm. Charlie was key in developing new distribution in Western Europe and South America.

During his time at MicroDynamics, Charlie took a new interest in mechanical engineering. Despite Charlie’s duty as VP of sales and marketing, he spent a great deal of time co-developing a host of devices for the emerging industry of refractive surgery. Charlie is a certified management consultant through The Institute of Management Consultants, a certified packaging professional, certified through the Institute of Packaging Professionals and had great success in helping startup companies reach the managed healthcare venue. Charlie holds two US patents for medical packaging equipment.

Meet Thomas

Thomas is our firm's in-house tech whiz. A self-taught programmer, he is as fluent in C++, Ruby and countless other programming languages as he is in the Japanese language. He creates our websites and software we use to communicate with our test equipment.

[Thomas J. Webb]

Thomas is a self-taught engineer and provides vital input into our total technology plan. Thomas has a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. He is currently studying for a Master’s degree with a dual-major in Business Administration and Biotech at Cal State Channel Islands. He hopes to apply his computer science expertise to biological systems in development of medical and agricultural technologies.

People are Talking

"When we first got into medical manufacturing, we didn't know much about pouch sealing. Charlie took the time to explain the process and the equipment needed to do the "right" job. Through recommendations from my pouch supplier and conversations with Charlie, I knew I didn't need to look anywhere else for my equipment needs."

V-402-VFB

Van der Stahl Scientific is excited about its latest technology. The V402-VGT. This patent pending technology is slated to change the way medical device packaging companies package atmosphere critical medical devices. Many medical device companies that produce medicine embedded devices have found that an ambient environment can produce moisture within the pouch have damaged the efficaciousness of their embedded drug.

Moisture has been shown in many drug embedded devices to change the chemical structure of the embedded drug and therefore medical device makers have been struggling for solid solutions to manage this unfavorable environment. With a newV402-VGT, device companies can remove the ambient environment from the pouch and further, flushes the pouch with an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon.

This flushing process greatly aids in the removal of unwanted gases within the pouch, creating a more stable environment for the drug-embedded medical device. But there is another important aspect to gas flushing a medical pouch. This process also removes the oxidization of an embedded drug and device by leaving behind only inert gas that will not oxidize the chemistry or part.

Many packaging engineers have also found that by vacuuming their part tightly within a tray in a flexible pouch they’re also able to make stable the device within the pouch. This thwarts movement of the part within the bag that aids with the prevention of chaffing the pouch and possibly damaging the device.

But there is one more trick this sealer has up its sleeve. It also can be converted into a burst tester with just the flick of a switch. Medical device packaging engineers can now perform an ASTM-1140 burst test, which is designed to understand seal and material strength of an unrestrained pouch by inflating to the point of failure. This system, just like our MS-451PV, also has the ability to schedule required pouch performance testing in order to be certain that the device will not be delivered into the sterile field with the pouch compromised. The FDA’s expectation is regular pouch performance challenges and burst testing is an excellent way for quality teams to understand pouch seal strength and material strength in a simple process.
